In 2009, the London Arts Council held a roundtable session with members of London’s arts community to discuss recognition of certain milestones we have achieved and continue to build on the amazing momentum the London Arts scene has realized in the last many years.

Our thinking initially centered around a one-time celebration however; it quickly changed to creating an awareness campaign for the arts to…

Celebrate. Engage. Invest

Celebrate - the creativity, passion, accomplishments and milestones of the arts in London;

Engage - raise awareness of the arts that surround Londoners every day;

Invest - encourage Londoner’s to involve themselves in the arts community through their time,
expertise, knowledge and finances.

Timing is everything
While planning at the local level started to take shape, a national campaign was afoot which had some of the hallmarks of our local campaign, we contacted the National Project Director David Moss in Montreal and asked to have London’s name added to the list of City’s interested in being part of a national movement to celebrate culture in Canada. The national campaign is called “Culture Days”
www.culturedays.ca and the London Arts Council is working aggressively to have London recognized through our local “heART” campaign.

We have experienced strong support and commitment for the campaign from community leaders such as London Transit Commission, London Public Library, RTraction, London Convention Centre, City of London, Downtown London, ReForest London, /A\ Channel, London Economic Development Corporation and the list continues to grow as community partners of the arts find out about our initiative.

Public Art London
Public Art London is based on a Public Art Policy, developed by the City of London and London Arts Council (LAC), the policy was formally approved by City Council November 2007. With the policy’s adoption City Council made a commitment of funding in the amount of $160,000 annually for Public Art in our City. The policy is the result of the work of the London Arts Council’s public art task force which was tasked with reviewing policy and programs in other municipalities, consulting with experts in the field of public art, and meeting with City staff. The Public Art Program is an exciting addition to the London Arts Council’s suite of programs and services. The program is administered by LAC staff with input and guidance from the LAC Board appointed “Public Art Task Force” which is comprised of volunteers such as; artists, art educators, administrators, curators and design professionals. LAC works closely with various departments of the City in our administration of the program to determine sites and ensure that safety and other technical guidelines are met. A jury of artists and art professionals, as well as, community representation and technical advisors review submissions. Public art can involve a wide variety of people and professions, perspectives and parameters, integral to the development of the program is respect for the work of artists. London Arts Council believes that integrity of the artistic work is central to a successful Public Art Program.
